THE COUNTRY HOUSE GARDEN DE WIERSSE
In the Netherlands, north east of Arnhem, towards Münster.

Described by a leading Netherlands newspaper, the Algemeen Dagblad, in 2003, as The most beautiful garden in the Netherlands.

Surrounded by its farmland and woods, away from the world, lies the moated manor house, with 38 acres of garden and 74 acres of landscape park, lived in, designed and managed by the family since 1678.
In this historic and beautifully kept garden a sequence of surprises awaits the visitor – avenues and pergolas, fountains and statues, meadows and formal parterres, bridges over a gently flowing stream and a serpentine tunnel of beech.
The moss and ferns beside the paths of the romantic wild garden give way first to a productive kitchen garden and then to the constantly changing borders of the sunken garden.
This year the special Thursday guided tours start on 1 April to take advantage of the flowering of the wild daffodils – from Narcissus pseudonarcissus to Narcissus poeticus, as well as of countless other bulbs and spring flowers, naturalised in woodland and meadow: fritillaries, crocusses, species tulips, lilies-of-the valley, Leucojum, Erythronium, Gladiolus byzantinus…
Copies of articles describing De Wiersse in ‘The Garden’ (III ’92) and ‘Gardens Illustrated’ (X/XI ’96) are available.
